In June my Spanish class and I visited the famous Picasso museum in Málaga at the south coast of Spain. This visit was very inspiring for me, because I love to draw and paint. I even got to see Picasso’s birthplace!

Now you could think “Oh, just another boring museum”, but the guidance was special. We looked at a few drawings very intensely and got to interpret it ourselves. Meanwhile, the guide told us a lot about Picasso and his life, his inspiration and a lot more :)

Picasso was an amazing artist in many ways. At the age of 12 he could already paint perfectly, e.g. portraits, due to his father. He had also been a painter and had taught his son how to draw. However, his skills came mostly from his talent and passion. He was the Mozart of art.

But what should he do now? Since he could draw perfectly at this young age, there was no challenge for him anymore.

Nowadays most people know Picasso not for his realistic artworks, but for his abstract ones. In many ways one can see that he was exceptionally creative. Through his life his style changed a lot.

The funny thing is that the older he got, the more childish he drew. His drawings became very abstract and difficult to interpret. Finally he invented a totally new style: the cubism.

Wikipedia: "In Cubist artwork, objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context"

Furthermore, Picasso did not want to spent hours on drawing one single picture. He had too many ideas and his head was so full of imagination that he could draw 100 (!!) pictures in 1 day!! :D That is insane!

Besides, he did not just draw or paint, but he was a stage designer, printmaker, ceramicist and a sculptor.

One artwork of him fascinates me particularly: a video in which he paints on glass and the camera films him from the other side. For me that is just impressing and wonderful.

Even though his art seems to be meaningless sometimes, there is always a message behind it, but: you really have to think about it!

Picasso wanted people to think for themselves. Therefore, he did not even name his artwork. In his opinion that would already take too much away. And this is what I really admire of him: he respected the thoughts of the individual.

Thus he was an incredible artist. Moreover, he had an amazing personality. Some of his sculptures in the museum look really bad and simple, and in fact they are something every child could easily build. However, by this he tried to say that everyone can artist and everybody has talent! To me this is the most admirable thought of him.

Unfortunately Picasso died in 1973 at the age of 91, however his spirit will always live in his artworks and inspire millions of people all over the world.
